Steps to Apply, Get Approved and Spend ESA Funds

This user-friendly platform is designed to help you navigate the diverse landscape of Education Savings Accounts across different programs. As a parent, this tool will show you a an easy to understand outline on the steps you need to take in order to set up an ESA and how to access the funds.

  • APPLICATION AND APPROVAL: APPLICATION AND APPROVAL
  • Application And Approval Steps:
    • Step:

      Application process opens 5/1 until 6/1 for fall, and 11/1 until 12/1 for spring. 

    • Step:

      OPI (Office of Public Instruction) will notify parents within 30 days of the close of the application window.

    • Step:

      Info needed for application:

      1. Student + parents names
      2. Student birthdate
      3. Student state ID number
      4. Contact info
      5. IDEA designation with documentation (evaluation report, IEP, or private place service plan)
      6. Residential school district name and any prior districts attended
    • Step:

      Once student is determined eligible, OPI will provide a contract for parent to sign.

    • Step:

      Parents must submit a W-9 with their contract.

    • Step:

      Once contract is signed, parents may begin to submit receipts for allowable expenses incurred on or after 7/1.

    • Step:

      By 8/1 OPI will notify districts of participating families for the fall: 2/1 for spring

      Parents will utilize the electronic management system on OPI’s website to submit reimbursements.
